FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS...
WHAT DO YOU LEARN IN YOUR MUSIC LESSONS?
That question is often asked by prospective students. Our
teachers make it a priority to get to know you on a personal level and
to become familiar with your personal musical desires and goals.
We do not treat every student the same in terms of what and how we teach.
A seven year old having their first guitar lesson will have very
different needs than a fifty seven year old taking up piano for the second
time after having had lessons as a child.
The main reason to choose SMA as your music lesson provider, is
that we are sensitive to the fact that every student is an individual.
If you enroll here for lessons, we will work with you to make a plan
that will fit your needs and musical preferences. At the first lesson
your teacher will ask you about your favorite type of music, and set
goals to help accomplish whatever musical aspirations you have for
yourself or your child.
WHAT STYLES OF MUSIC DO YOU TEACH?
We teach all styles from rock, pop, jazz, country and blues to classical.
ARE YOUR INSTRUCTORS QUALIFIED?
At
the Scranton Music Academy, no matter which teacher you take lessons
with, you'll be getting a teacher who will help you reach your musical
goals. Our teachers bring to SMA, diverse and accomplished backgrounds
in performance, teaching and education. We have 26 music teachers, all with either university training or professional performance experience.
Some of our teachers have graduated from the excellent music programs in our local
colleges, such as Marywood University, Baptist Bible College, Wilkes
University, Mansfield University and SUNY Binghamton. Others have
attended some of the nations top music schools including Berklee College
of Music, Manhattan School of Music, New England Conservatory,
Westminster Choir College, Eastman School of Music, Curtis School of
Music, University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music and
Temple University. In addition to their teaching credentials, our teachers have warm personalities, are extremely friendly and strive to get to know each student and their parent on a personal level. For more info on our teachers click here.
VOICE LESSONS
(for ages 10 and up)
Our voice teachers teach various styles, depending on your favorite style, ranging from popular music, to musical theatre, to jazz, and classical. If you have always
wanted to be a better rock, pop, country, jazz, gospel, R&B, theatre or classical singer, then we have the right voice teachers for you. Voice students
spend time each week doing physical exercises to improve their vocal
range, ear training, breath control, vibrato, tone production,
enunciation and more. And we do all this while working on songs that you like to sing!
PIANO, JAZZ PIANO LESSONS
(for ages 5 and up)
Our piano teachers teach a variety of styles from classical to popular
music. Whether you want to learn Bach or Alicia Keys, our teachers are
happy to help you become the pianist you want to be. Our piano faculty
will show you the fundamentals of sight reading, technique and theory,
but they will also incorporate your favorite songs into your lessons.
You do not have to have a piano at home to take lessons. A simple full
size electronic keyboard will suffice for the first 6 months. We recommend a keyboard that has regular sized keys and a touch
sensitive response. A touch sensitive keyboard means if you press a key
harder it will play louder and if you press a key softer it will play
quieter. Our piano
teachers have warm personalities and enjoy sharing their love for the
piano with you.
GUITAR LESSONS - ELECTRIC, ACOUSTIC & BASS
(for ages 8 and up)
Our guitar teachers teach rock, blues, metal, country and classical
guitar lessons on electric and acoustic guitars. Beginner students can
expect to work on chords, simple songs and melodies, sight reading and
theory. We balance musicianship and fun by making sure that each lesson
you are challenged with a new technical or theory concept, but always
end with something fun such as your favorite riff or song. We use a
variety of guitar method books to accomplish this and encourage students
to bring CDs or their iPod to their lesson to learn their favorite
tunes.
VIOLIN, FIDDLE, VIOLA, CELLO & UPRIGHT BASS LESSONS
(for ages 5 and up)
Our strings program offers private instruction in violin, viola or
cello. Our violin lessons start as young as age 5. Due to the size of
the instrument, most cello lessons start at 10 years of age or older. We have
students of all ages from children to adults. Our violin, viola and cello teachers have university or
college degrees in their instrument and many perform regularly with
local orchestras or bands. Our private lessons are one-on-one
instruction and lesson lengths are 30 minutes or 1 hour.
DRUM LESSONS
(for ages 8 and up)
Our drum instructors teach rock, metal, jazz, funk, blues and many
other styles. Drum language can be complex and our instructors will
challenge any drummer with a wide variety of technical exercises
designed to improve your speed and comfort. All drummers bring in their
favorite drum parts to learn in their lessons and theory is encouraged.
We have many drum students who play in local bands be it in rock clubs
or their local churches. You do not have to purchase a drum kit to take
lessons. Beginning students can learn with a drum pad and sticks for
around $25.00.
Students use our drum set at their lessons and do not have to bring
anything except their drum sticks and a notebook.
TRUMPET, FRENCH HORN, TROMBONE AND TUBA LESSONS
(for ages 9 and up)
Our brass lessons include private trumpet lessons, French horn lessons,
trombone lessons and tuba lessons. Students for these instruments
usually are ages 9 or older as they need to have developed a greater
lung capacity and in the case of the tuba need to be big enough to hold
the instrument. Our brass teachers have university or college degrees in
music and perform in everything from salsa bands to local orchestras.
We can help students enhance their skills for their school band program
or develop advanced skills to become soloists. Lessons are offered in
30 minute and 1 hour lengths.
SAXOPHONE, CLARINET, FLUTE, OBOE AND BASSOON LESSONS
(for ages 9 and up)
Our private flute lessons generally start at age 7 and older, but
sometimes younger students will start with a special curved-head flute.
We have both male and female flute instructors and as with all our
instruments, the teachers have university or college degrees in
woodwinds. Our flute lessons are offered in 30 minute, 45 minute or 1
hour lengths. Our flute students have the option to perform in our
Christmas and Summer recitals with many also performing in local music
festivals such as the Kiwanis festival. We offer a wide range of styles
and many students choose to do their Royal Conservatory of Music flute
exams.
Saxophone & Clarinet Lessons - Our private saxophone lessons
and clarinet lessons start from age 8 onwards. Earlier than age 8, a
student typically does not have the lung capacity and strength to handle
these instruments. Our saxophone and clarinet instructors are
proficient on both instruments so a student can start with clarinet
lessons if they wish and switch to saxophone lessons without having to
change instructors. Our saxophone and clarinet instructors actively
perform in all types of bands and ensembles and as soloists. Saxophone
lessons and clarinet lessons are offered in 30 minute and 1
hour lengths.
Bassoon & Oboe Lessons - We also offer lessons in other
woodwind instruments such as bassoon and oboe. Most bassoon lessons or
oboe lessons start at age 11 or older as these double reed instruments
are a little more difficult for younger students. Our private bassoon
lessons and oboe lessons are offered in 30 minuteand 1 hour
lengths.
