Woodwind Lessons

Saxophone & Clarinet Lessons Our private saxophone lessons and clarinet lessons start from age 8. Earlier than age 8, a student typically does not have the lung capacity and strength to handle these instruments. Our saxophone and clarinet instructors are proficient on both instruments so a student can start with clarinet lessons if they wish and switch to saxophone lessons without having to change instructors. Our saxophone and clarinet instructors actively perform in all types of bands and ensembles and as soloists. Saxophone lessons and clarinet lessons are offered in 30-minute and 1-hour lengths.

Flute Lessons - Our private flute lessons generally start at age 7 and older. Our teachers have university or college degrees in woodwinds. Our flute lessons are offered in 30 minute or 1 hour lengths. Our flute students have the option to perform in our Winter and Summer recitals.

Brass Lessons

Our brass lessons include trumpet lessons, French horn lessons, trombone lessons, baritone lessons and tuba lessons. Our trumpet teachers recommend that students for these instruments usually start at ages 9 or older as they need to have developed a greater lung capacity. And in the case of the tuba, they need to be big enough to hold the instrument. Our brass teachers have university or college degrees in music and perform in everything from salsa bands to local orchestras. We can help students enhance their skills for their school band program or develop advanced skills to become soloists. Lessons are offered in 30-minute and 1-hour lengths.

What’s the #1 reason to study woodwinds and brass at the Academy?‍

Our music instructors are warm and friendly, and get to know each student and parent on a personal level. We work with each individual or parent to craft a lesson plan that fits the student’s unique needs and favorite type of music. Whether you're playing in local bands,a seven year old taking their first lesson, or a fifty seven year old returning to lessons after many years, our teachers will share their love for the instrument and help you set goals to achieve your musical aspirations.

How qualified are Scranton Music Academy's instructors?

Our faculty have attended some of the nations top music schools including Berklee College of Music, Manhattan School of Music, New England Conservatory, Westminster Choir College, Eastman School of Music, Curtis School of Music, University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music and Temple University.  All our teachers have a university music degree or have many years of professional performing experience. Some have graduated from the excellent music programs in our local colleges, such as Marywood University, Baptist Bible College, Wilkes University, Mansfield University and SUNY Binghamton.

Do I need an instrument to learn the instrument?

Yes, you do need an instrument so you can practice at home, in between your lessons.  You don't need to buy one though. Many students start out renting their instrument. We can help you with that! Just ask at the school office!

Are there recitals?‍

Absolutely! Every January and June, our students have the opportunity to perform in our recitals. Unlike most of our competitors, we do not charge students a fee to perform. And admission is free, so you can invite all of your family and friends.

Do I have to know how to read music?
