Violin Lessons & Cello Lessons

(VIOLIN - AGES 5 AND UP)

(CELLO - AGES 10 AND UP)

Our strings program offers private lessons in violin, fiddle, viola & cello lessons.

Our string lessons are for both acoustic and electric instruments. All techniques are offered in the lessons such as how to properly hold the instrument, arco and pizzicato styles, sight reading, intonation, double stops, vibrato, harmonics and musicianship. We welcome students who want to study classical style, bluegrass, rock, and pop.

What’s the #1 reason to choose Scranton Music Academy for violin/cello lessons?

Our strings instructors are warm and friendly, and get to know each student and parent on a personal level. We work with you to craft a lesson plan that fits your individual needs and the student's favorite type of music. Whether you're playing in local bands, churches or orchestras, a seven year old taking their first lesson, or a fifty year old returning to violin lessons after many years, we’ll set goals to achieve your musical aspirations.

What styles of violin and cello do you teach?‍

We teach all styles from classical and pop to jazz, country and fiddle!

How qualified are Scranton Music Academy's string instructors?

All of our teachers at Scranton Music Academy have a University Music Degree or have many years of professional performing experience. Some have graduated from the excellent music programs in our local colleges, such as Marywood University, Baptist Bible College, Wilkes University, Mansfield University and SUNY Binghamton. Others have attended some of the nations top music schools including Berklee College of Music, Manhattan School of Music, New England Conservatory, Westminster Choir College, Eastman School of Music, Curtis School of Music, University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music and Temple University.

Are there recitals?‍

Absolutely! Every January and June, our students have the opportunity to perform in our recitals. Unlike most of our competitors, we do not charge students a fee to perform. And admission is free, so you can invite all of your family and friends.

At each recital, we do raise donations (contributions are optional) for a local charity. We believe that philanthropy and music go hand in hand.

Do I need a violin or cello to learn the instrument?‍

Yes, you do need an instrument so you can practice at home, in between your lessons.  Violin and Cello students should have an instrument prior to their first lesson.

String instruments come in a variety of different sizes and your child will change instruments as they grow. It is recommended that students rent their instrument until they are ready for a full-size instrument.

Locally, you can expect to spend $13 per month for violin rentals and $36 per month for cello rentals. Many places will allow you to "rent to own." Rental shops will almost always size the student for their instrument.

Our strings teachers can also help to guide parents / students looking to purchase a quality instrument and can size students for an appropriately sized instrument.

Do I have to know how to read music?
